Cyprus Timeline[edit | edit source]

  • 7500-3900 BC BC First traces of life from the Neolithic period in Choirokoitia.
  • 325-358 BC AD Conquest of Ptolemy, general of Alexander the Great.
  • 58 BC AD The island is annexed to the Roman Empire.
  • 495. Division of the Roman Empire between Rome and Constantinople, Cyprus becomes part of the Byzantine Empire.
  • 1192. Beginning of the Frankish period.
  • 1489. Beginning of the Venetian period.
  • 1571. Populated by Greeks and occupied in the Middle Ages by the Crusaders, Cyprus is conquered by the Ottomans.
  • 1878. The British settle on the island in exchange for supporting the Turks against Russia.
  • 1914. The British annex the island when the Ottoman Empire allies with Germany.
  • 1955. Beginning of the uprising of the Greek Cypriots who demanded the enosis, that is to say the "union" and the attachment to Athens. But the Turks retaliated by asking for taksim, the partition of the island between Greece and Turkey ...
  • 1956. Monsignor Makarios, the spiritual leader of the Greek community, is forced into exile.
  • August 16, 1960. Independence of the Cypriot Republic. According to the new Constitution, the President of the Republic is Greek and the Vice-President Turkish.
  • 1963. Monsignor Makarios, the first President of the Republic, proposes a revision of the constitution with a reduction in the rights of the Turkish community. Turkish Cypriot ministers leave federal government.
  • 1964. The UN sends a force to end the fighting between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
  • July 20, 1974. Fearing that Cyprus will come under the control of Greece, Turkey organizes a coup and invades the northern part of the island.
  • November 15, 1983. Creation of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", unrecognized by the international community.
  • 1990: official candidacy for the EEC (European Union) of the Republic of Cyprus (Greek part).
  • 2002. First direct negotiations between Rauf Denktash, president of the Turkish part of the island, and Glafcos Clรฉridรจs, president of the Republic of Cyprus. The UN gives the two parties a peace plan providing for the creation of a state inspired by the Swiss Confederation, with a federal government and cantons.
  • 12 December 2002. The Copenhagen European Council paves the way for the accession of Cyprus (and nine other countries) in 2004.
  • April 24, 2004. By referendum, the population of the south of the island rejects the reunification project which the Turkish Cypriots voted for.
  • 2005. The CTP (Turkish Republican Party, center-left) of Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat in favor of reunification, wins legislative elections in the Turkish side.
  • 2007. Opening of several crossing points in the green line, the wall cutting the capital, Nicosia.
  • 2008. Cyprus adopts the euro, the single European currency.
  • 2009. Opening of the seventh crossing point between the south and the north of Cyprus, in the west of the island.
  • 2010. Archbishop Chrysostomos II crosses for the first time since the occupation in 1974 the "green line" to reach the part of the island under Turkish control.
  • 2012. The rating agency Standard & Poor's downgrades the rating of nine euro zone states, including Cyprus.
  • 2013. The Eurogroup adopts a rescue plan in favor of the Cypriot banks, which lost 4.5 billion euros in the debt restructuring. This unprecedented plan provides for exceptional taxation of all Cypriot bank accounts.
  • 2015. Supporter of reconciliation with the Republic of Cyprus, the candidate of the Common Democracy Party (center left) Mustafa Akinci wins the second round of the election for the presidency of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
  • 2016. The ruling Democratic (Conservative) Rally wins parliamentary elections in the Republic of Cyprus.
  • July 2017. After more than a week of intense negotiations at the Alpine resort of Crans-Montana, Switzerland, under the aegis of the United Nations, new talks on reunification fail.
