1500 BC AD Settlement of Lapita.
1643 Abel Tasman, Dutch navigator, discovers part of the Fiji Islands.
1774 Captain James Cook's first visit to the islands.
1789 and 1792 Captain Bligh explores new lands in Fiji.
1796 The existence of Taveuni Island is revealed by Captain Wilson.
1835 The first missionaries, D. Cargill and W. Cross, land in Fiji at Labeka, archipelago of Lau.
1854 Ratu Cakobau is the first Fijian leader to officially convert to Christianity.
1860 The first waves of European and American immigrants settle in Levuka.
1865 First draft of a Fijian Constitution signed by 7 independent chiefs of the Fiji Islands.
1870 More than 2,000 immigrants are registered on the territory.
1871 Ratu Cakobau is proclaimed King of Fiji.
1874 Signature of the Deed of Cession of Fiji to the British Crown.
1875 Sir Arthur Gordon becomes the first governor of Fiji.
1879 On May 14, the Leonidas landed more than 500 Indians going to work under an "Indenture System" contract in the sugar cane fields.
1916 End of the "Indenture" system. 60,553 Indians are registered in the territory.
October 10, 1970 Gaining independence after 96 years of colonial administration.
1972 First general elections under the 1970 Constitution.
1987 April 12, electoral victory for the FLP-NFP coalition. May 14, coup. September 25, second coup. October 7, proclamation of the Republic. October 15, exclusion from the Commonwealth.
July 25, 1990 Promulgation of the new Constitution in favor of ethnic Fijians.
1992 First legislative elections under the new Constitution. Electoral victory of the SVT led by Mr. Rabuka, appointed Prime Minister.
1994 New legislative elections. Mr. Rabuka is appointed Prime Minister again, following his party's victory.
1996 Formation of an independent commission under the authority of New Zealand governor Paul Reeves.
1997 Unanimously, Parliament adopts a new Constitution including a Bill of Rights and the formation of a multi-party government. Fiji is readmitted to the Commonwealth.
May 1999 Victory of the Labor Party. Mahendra Chaudry becomes Prime Minister.
May 19, 2000 Coup d'Etat by George Speight; Prime Minister Chaudry and members of the government are being held hostage.
July 13, 2000 Election of the new President of the Republic, Josefa Iloilo.
July 14, 2000 Release of the hostages.
August 2001 Victory of the SDL and nomination of Qarase to the post of Prime Minister.
May 2006 New victory for the SDL; Qarase remains in office.
December 5, 2006 Peaceful coup d'รฉtat by Bainimarama which creates an interim government.
January 4, 2007 The putschist hands over powers to President-elect Iloilo. Bainimarama is appointed Prime Minister.
April 10, 2009 The president repeals the Constitution and takes full powers.
May 1, 2009 Pacific Islands Forum dismisses Fiji.
July 30, 2009 Iloilo withdrew from power and vice-president Ratu Epeli Nailatikau took the lead.
December 15, 2009 Cyclone Mick, force 2, hits the archipelago and leaves at least three dead and thousands displaced.
February 1, 2010 Homosexuality is removed from the list of crimes and legalized.
November 12, 2012 Ratu Epeli Nailatikau is re-elected for three more years at the head of the country.
2013 Death of President Josefo Iloilo.
September 2013 The country adopts a new Constitution.
September 17, 2014 Legislative elections allow incumbent Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama (more commonly known as Frank Bainimarama) of the "Fiji First" Party, to retain his post.
September 26, 2014 Reintegration of Fiji into the Commonwealth.
October 24, 2014 Reintegration of the country into the heart of the Pacific Islands Forum.
November 12, 2015 New presidential elections which see the winner, Jioji Konrote, from the "Fiji first" party. He was then the first President of the Republic of Fiji who was not an indigenous Melanesian but Polynesian. Before occupying this position, he was Minister of Employment, it is he himself who enforced the minimum wage of 2.32 F $ / hour across the country.
February 2016 Category 5 tropical cyclone Winston hits Fiji. It will kill around 40 people and have a devastating impact: it remains to this day the most intense cyclone ever recorded in the southern hemisphere.
November 14, 2018 During the legislative elections, Voreqe Bainimarama retains his post of Prime Minister. His "Fiji first" party won narrowly with 50.02%.
