St. Kitts & Nevis Timeline[edit | edit source]

  • Christopher Columbus arrived on these islands in 1493. The island of Saint-Christophe was briefly colonized from 1538 by French Huguenots before they were driven out by the Spaniards. An English colony was founded nearby in good agreement in 1624 by Captain Thomas Warner. After good initial relations, the settlers massacred the last Kalinago two years later.
  • Subsequently, France and Great Britain continue to dispute Saint-Christophe, and it is the latter which takes final control in 1713.
  • In 1967, Saint Kitts and Nevis became, with Anguilla, a state associated with the British crown, with total internal autonomy. But in 1971, Anguilla rebels and obtains the right to secede.
  • In 1981, Saint Kitts and Nevis joined the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis achieved independence on September 19, 1983, as a Commonwealth Kingdom.
  • In August 1998, a referendum held in Niรฉvรจs to separate from Saint-Christophe narrowly failed to reach the required two-thirds majority.
  • The country has distinguished itself in the field of athletics in recent years. In 2003, sprinter Kim Collins won the 100 meters at the athletics world championships in Saint-Denis, France. In September 2011, Kim Collins won bronze in the 100m and he also won it with the 4 ร— 100m torchbearers at the Daegu World Championships.
