  • 1947. The United Kingdom presides over the partition of its Indian empire on confessional grounds. Founded on August 14, Pakistan includes West Pakistan and East Pakistan, separated by 1,600 kilometers of Indian territory.
  • 1949. Creation of the Awami League by Mujibur Rahman, who advocates the independence of East Pakistan.
  • 1970. The Awami League wins the legislative elections. Pakistani leaders refuse to recognize the results.
  • March 1971. Mujibur Rahman is arrested and West Pakistan launches a violent military attack.
  • December 1971. The separatists, aided by the Indian army, defeat the forces of West Pakistan. Foundation of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
  • 1975-1990. Succession of military coups.
  • March 1991. Ms. Khaleda Zia leads the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to victory.
  • 1996. The Awami League wins the elections and brings Ms. Sheikh Hasina to power.
  • 2001. The BNP wins the elections.
  • January 6, 2006. The Awami League returns to power.
  • April 22, 2013. Election of Mr. Abdul Hamid (Awami League), the only candidate, as President of the Republic.
  • April 24, 2013. The collapse of the Rana Plaza, a textile factory near Dhaka, kills more than a thousand people.
  • January 5, 2014. The Awami League wins the legislative elections, marked by fierce repression.
  • January 2016. Two students are sentenced to death for the 2013 murder of atheist blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider.
  • July 1, 2016. A bombing claimed by the Organization of Islamic State kills 24 in Dhaka.
