Gambia Timeline[edit | edit source]

  • The border was fixed in 1889 and despite French attempts to recover an enclave cutting off part of Senegal, independence was proclaimed in 1965. The question of union has never ceased to be raised by the Senegalese government.
  • In 1967, a treaty of association inaugurated close cooperation (defense, police, telecommunications and transport).
  • On December 17, 1981, the two countries created the Confederation of Senegambia, dissolved on September 30, 1989 and replaced on January 9, 1991 by a new cooperation treaty. None of the large joint dam projects (Balinghor in The Gambia, Kรฉkrรฉti in Senegal) developed by the Gambia River Development Organization (OMVG) has been carried out.
  • In 1990 the Program for Sustained Development (PSD) was implemented in order to restore the balance of payments and reduce external debt (53.5% of GNP in 1993), but the military coup of July 23 1994 politically isolated the country and the regime of Lieutenant Jammeh (re-elected in 2001) became very authoritarian.
