São Tomé & Príncipe Timeline[edit | edit source]

Date Event
1471 the island of Sao Tome and discovered on Saint Thomas' Day (12/21) by the Portuguese navigators João de Santarém and Pedro Escobar. The island of Principe is discovered shortly after. These islands are then uninhabited.
end of the 15th century Portuguese colonists bring in slaves from the continent to cultivate sugar cane.
1574 a riot of slaves destroys the sugar cane plantations.
1876 slavery is abolished on the archipelago.
1951 the archipelago gains the status of Portuguese overseas province.
1953 nationalist demonstrations punctuate the year.
July 12, 1975 independence is proclaimed and Manuel Pinto da Costa, secretary of the Liberation Movement of Sao Tome and Principe (MLSTP, Marxist) becomes President of the Republic. He then established a one-party Marxist regime and nationalized the plantations.
1990 the multiparty system is restored under pressure from the opposition gathered within the Democratic Coalition.
1991 the main opposition party, the Democratic Convergence Party, wins the legislative elections and its leader Miguel Trovoada is elected president.
1994 the Social Democratic Party (PSD, ex-MLSTP) wins the elections.
April 25, 1995 the island of Principe proclaims its autonomy.
August 15, 1995 President Trovoada is the victim of a putsch, but he is restored in the following days.
July 1996 Miguel Trovoada is re-elected President of the Republic.
2001 Election to the presidency of the Republic of the businessman Fradique de Menezes.
July 16, 2003 a coup d'état deposes President Fradique de Menezes. Restored in office after a week after an agreement with the army.
