1502 Vespuce observes the [Malvinas] islands.  
1592 August John Davis discovers the Falkland Islands.  
1764 Feb 3 Bougainville arrives in the Falklands accompanied by Pernety, chaplain and naturalist.  
1764 Apr 8 Bougainville leaves the Falklands for France on the Eagle.  
1765 jan 5 Bougainville lands in the Falklands.  
1765 Feb 3 Bougainville recognizes the Strait of Magellan and establishes contacts with the local populations. (Argentina) 
1765 Apr 28 Bougainville leaves the Falklands for France on the Eagle.  
1767 Feb 23 La Boudeuse de Bougainville arrives in the Falklands.  
1767 May 1 The flute "L'Etoile" joins "La Boudeuse" from Bougainville to the Falklands.  
1767 June 2 La Boudeuse de Bougainville leaves the Falklands.  
1820 Argentina occupies the Malvinas Islands.  
1832 The schooner "Unicorn" arrives at Port St-Louis (Malvinas). FitzRoy bought it from and renamed it Adventure, to make it a support boat to the Beagle for mapping surveys.  
1833 jan 2 The United Kingdom claimed sovereignty over the Falklands by sending the warships Tyne and Clio under Captain Onslow there.  
1833 Feb 1 The Beagle (with Darwin) drops anchor in Port St-Louis.  
1833 Apr 6 The Beagle (with Darwin), from Port St-Louis to the Falklands, sets sail for the continent.  
1833 June The United Kingdom establishes a colony in the Falkland Islands and expels the Argentinian inhabitants.  
1834 Feb 16 The Beagle (with Darwin) stops in the Berkeley Strait, on the eastern island of the Falklands.  
1914 Dec 8 The British fleet destroys the German naval squadron at Von Spee in the Falklands. She was sunk aboard the SMS Scharnhorst.  
1965 A UN resolution calls for discussions on the future of the Falklands. (United States) 
1966 An armed Peronist commando raid and captured Port Stanley then surrendered.  
1967 AE Secretary Brown begins talks with Argentina over the Falklands: the UK is ready to relinquish sovereignty if islanders' rights and way of life can be guaranteed.  
1968 Feb Conservative MPs are starting a campaign to "keep the British Falkland Islands".  
1968 Jul Gvt Wilson begins secret negotiations to transfer sovereignty from the Falklands to Argentina but ended at the last minute.  
1968 nov The Minister of AE Chalfont fails to convince the Ilians of the Falklands of the benefits of an agreement with Argentina.  
1982 Apr 2 The Argentine invasion of the Falklands begins. Governor Hunt surrenders and the Argentine military junta announces the capture of Port Stanley.  
1982 Apr 5 The British Armada grouped around the aircraft carriers "Invincible" and "Hermes" embarks from Portsmouth for the Falklands, with a stopover on Ascension Island.  
1982 Apr 30 The British begin to bombard the runway at Port Stanley.  
1982 May 2 The British submarine Conqueror torpedoed the Argentine cruiser General-Belgrano: 323 dead.  
1982 May 4 Sheffield (one of the most modern buildings of the Royal Navy) is destroyed by an exocet missile: 20 dead and 24 wounded.  
1982 May 21 British troops land in San Carlos Bay, west of Port Stanley.  
1982 May 21 The Argentines and the British begin a violent naval air battle in the bay of San Carlos.  
1982 May 23 The British are advancing towards Port Stanley.  
1982 May 25 Argentinian exocet missiles sink the British destroyer Coventry and the container ship Atlantic-Convoyer.  
1982May 26 The British make a land offensive towards Port Darwin and Goose Green.  
1982 June 8 Argentine A-4 Skyhawks destroy a British landing craft, the Sir-Galahad, at Bluff Cove.  
1982 June 12 British troops seize Mount Longdon then Mount Tumbledown (19 paratroopers killed).  
1982 June 13 British troops surround Port Stanley, defended by 7k Argentinian soldiers.  
1982 June 14 Gal Menendez, Commander of the Argentinian garrison in Port Stanley (Falklands), surrendered to the British under Gal Moore.  
1985 The British government lifts trade barriers imposed on Argentine products and gives the Falklands a new status.
