Timeline[edit | edit source]

  • Around 1503 - Spanish ocean chief Juan de Bermudez finds the islands.
  • 1609 - Shipwrecked en route to Virginia, English wayfarer Sir George Somers settles. In his honor Bermuda is renamed as the Somers Islands, albeit the name doesn't stick.
  • Mid 1600s - African and American Indian slaves are brought to the islands. By 1617 they dwarf white pioneers.
  • 1684 - Bermuda turns into an English crown province.
  • 1834 - Slavery is nullified in Bermuda and the remainder of the British Empire.
  • 1941 - US sets up army installations on the islands.
  • 1946 - Ban on private vehicles and engine vehicles lifted. Vehicles are confined to one for every family.
  • 1957 - British armed force post, present beginning around 1797, is removed.

New constitution[edit | edit source]

  • 1968 - New constitution presented. English ruler is head of state, addressed by a lead representative. Inward self-government is conceded; the lead representative assumes liability for outer undertakings, safeguard, interior security and the police.
  • 1968 May - First broad political race under new constitution held in the midst of becoming racial and political pressure. Supportive of reliance United Bermuda Party (UBP) wins significant triumph. UBP gets back to drive in ensuing races notwithstanding developing help for favorable to freedom Progressive Labor Party (PLP).
  • 1973 - Tensions rise and come full circle in the death of Governor Richard Sharples.

  • 2013 May - Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Anguilla, Montserrat and the Turks and Caicos Islands consent to arrangements on offering charge data to Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain as a component of a global drive against tax avoidance.
  • 2014 May - Premier Craig Cannonier leaves in the midst of a debate over his supposed dealings with an American finance manager. Appointee Premier Michael Dunkley is selected in his place.
