Singapore Timeline[edit | edit source]

The selected events relate to the domestic situation or to international issues that have had a direct impact on the governance of the country.

August 9, 1965: Singapore Independence Proclamation[edit | edit source]

Former British colony integrated into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, Singapore proclaimed its independence on August 9, 1965. Since the integration of Singapore into Malaysia, heavy tensions between certain ethnic groups have led to violent disturbances on the island which have led to the independence of the City-State.

August 1967: Association of Southeast Asian Nations established[edit | edit source]

Foreign ministers of five Southeast Asian countries sign the Bangkok Declaration establishing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Created in the context of the Cold War, this economic, political and cultural alliance is set up to ease tensions between these Asian states.

November 6, 1989: Establishment of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation[edit | edit source]

Representatives of 12 states in the Asia-Pacific community are meeting in Canberra, Australia, to combine their efforts on the economic front. This meeting, which followed the initiative of Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, gave birth to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

June 12, 2018: Summit held between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un[edit | edit source]

After a period of tension, punctuated by several verbal threats, a rapprochement is emerging in 2018 between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. It culminates on June 12 with a summit in Singapore, a first between the heads of state of the United States and North Korea to make headlines around the world.

November 15, 2020: Signing of a major trade agreement between 15 countries in Asia and Oceania[edit | edit source]

After several years of negotiations, 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) join China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand to form the largest free trade area in the world. For many, this agreement is a demonstration of Chinese leadership in the region.
