South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands Timeline[edit | edit source]

  • South Georgia, named after George III, was discovered in 1675 by the British merchant Anthony de la Rochรฉ. The latter, returning from a commercial trip to Chile and going back to Europe, had been diverted from his route by a storm. The South Sandwich Islands were discovered by Captain James Cook in 1775.
  • During World War II, from the fall of 1943 to the fall of 1944, the Royal Navy deployed an armed merchant vessel to patrol South Georgia and the Antarctic waters against German raids, in addition to coastal protections still visible to our days at Cumberland Bay and Stromness Bay, armed with volunteers chosen from among the Norwegian whalers.
  • The King Edward Point Research Center, not far from the former Norwegian whaling station of Grytviken, became a small garrison after the Falklands War. It was released for civilian use in 2001 and is operated by the British Antarctic Survey. The latter also has a biological station on Bird Island, in the northwest of South Georgia. The South Sandwich Islands are uninhabited.
