1500 Discovery of the island by the Portuguese who named it Ilha do Cirne.
1598 Capture of the island by the Dutch who rename it Mauritius.
1638 Arrival of the first Dutch settlers, who will abandon the island in 1658.
1639 Introduction of sugar cane.
1664 Second attempt at Dutch colonization, from Cape Town.
1710 Definitive abandonment of the island by the Dutch.
1715 Annexation of the island by the French who renamed it Isle de France.
1719 Louis XV cedes the island to the Compagnie des Indes.
1721 Arrival of the first French settlers.
1735 Beginning of the administration of Mahé de La Bourdonnais. Foundation of Port Louis.
1745 Opening of the first sugar factories in Ferney and Villebague.
1746 Mahé de La Bourdonnais falls out of favor and has to leave the island.
1756 Seven Years' War with England. Arrival of the first privateers.
1764 Bankruptcy of the Compagnie des Indes. Louis XV bought Isle de France.
1767 Arrival of the first royal administrators, including the intendant Pierre Poivre.
1771 Construction of the first Tamil temple.
1775 American War of Independence. Resumption of the racing war.
1789 Having lost all its trading posts in India, France retreats to the Mascarenes.
1792 Establishment of the revolutionary government.
1794 The Paris Convention abolishes slavery.
1796 Refusing to renounce the practice of slavery, Isle de France secedes from the metropolis.
1800 The colonists call on Napoleon to protect the island against the English.
1803 Arrival of Decaen, governor of the Empire. Abolition of civil liberties.
1803 Resumption of the racing war. Epic of Robert Surcouf.
1810 August 28, victory of the French fleet over the English at Vieux Grand Port.
1810 November, the English take the island which they rename Mauritius.
1825 First Constitution. The English rule alone.
1832 Second Constitution. Seven Mauritian notables are appointed to the government. Publication of the first uncensored newspaper Le Cernéen. The English language becomes compulsory for administrative writing. Construction of the first paved road between Port
1838 Creation of the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB).
1835 Abolition of slavery. Beginning of the massive arrival of Indian immigrants.
1847 The One Penny and Two Pence stamps are put into circulation.
1851 Removal of the navigation laws. The sugar industry is booming.
1854 First cholera epidemic.
1864 Opening of the first railway line.
1866 First epidemic of malaria.
1869 Opening of the Suez Canal.
1876 Introduction of the silver rupee.
1882 Appearance of the telephone.
1884 First electric lighting.
1885 Creation of the Legislative Council comprising 10 elected members.
1901 Arrival of the first automobile.
1901 Visit of Gandhi.
1907 Arrival on the island of Manilal Doctor.
1909 End of engagement.
1914 First World War. Maurice sends soldiers to Europe.
1922 The first plane lands in Mauritius.
1924 Foundation of the Mauritius Union party by Edgar Laurent.
1929 Great Depression. Crisis in the sugar economy.
1934 Creation of the Mauritian rupee.
1936 Foundation of the Labor Party by Maurice Curé.
1937 Great strikes. Clashes with the police.
1940 Beginning of the Second World War. Implementation of rationing.
1941 Japan enters the war. The English build the Plaisance airport.
1945 First regular air connection by the RLAF (Air France).
1946 Implementation of the economic and social development plan.
1947 New Constitution. Elected officials become the majority in the Legislative Council.
1948 The Labor Party wins the elections. Hindus become the majority.
1951 Commonwealth Sugar Agreement.
1952 Eradication of malaria. Beginning of overpopulation.
1956 Stop of passenger rail transport.
1959 First elections by universal suffrage won by Ramgoolam.
1963 New elections. Ramgoolam becomes Prime Minister.
1965 Mauritius must cede the Chagos to England.
1967 Mauritians vote in favor of independence.
1968 Violent ethnic clashes. Proclamation of Independence on March 12.
1970 Creation of the free zone.
1982 Victory of the MMM in the elections. Anerood Jugnauth becomes Prime Minister.
1992 March 12, Mauritius becomes a republic.
1995 Legislative elections. Seewoosagur's son Navin Ramgoolam becomes Prime Minister.
1999 Violent demonstrations and interethnic clashes following the death of singer Kaya.
2000 Legislative elections: victory for the MMM-MSM. Sir Anerood Jugnauth Prime Minister.
2002 Resignation of the President of the Republic Cassam Uteem. Three presidents succeed each other in 10 days. Karl Offmann (MSM) is acting.
2003 Anerood Jugnauth president, Paul Bérenger Prime Minister.
2005 Legislative elections. Navin Ramgoulam Prime Minister. Anerood Jugnauth president.
2008 Le Morne mountain becomes part of the World Heritage of Humanity.
2010 Legislative elections: renewal of the team in place. Navin Ramgoulam is Prime Minister, Anerood Jugnauth is President.
April 2012 Resignation of the President of the Republic Anerood Jugnauth. Monique Ohsan-Bellepeau, of the Labor Party, is acting.
July 2012 Appointment of a new President of the Republic, Kailash Purryag, of the Labor Party.
December 2014 National elections. Victory of the Alliance Lepep (MSM - PMSD - ML). Anerood Jugnauth Prime Minister, Kailash Purryag president.
May 2015 Ramgoolan scandal: the former head of state is publicly accused of embezzling millions of rupees.
June 2015 Great first in Mauritius: following the resignation of President Kailash Purryag, it is a woman, renowned scientist, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, who takes the post of President.
January 2017 Handover of power from Anerood Jugnauth to his son Pravind Jugnauth, against a backdrop of criticism and controversy by the opposition parties.
March 2018 Resignation of Ameenah Gurib-Fakim following involvement in a financial scandal and too much political pressure. Barlen Vyapoori is acting.
