  • 1000-27 BC AD ➡ Kingdoms of the Illyrians.
  • 229 BC AD ➡ First conflicts with the Romans.
  • 27 BC AD ➡ The south of Bosnia becomes Roman.
  • 9 BC AD ➡ All of Bosnia is Roman. End of the kingdoms of Illyria.
  • 1st century ➡ Integration into the Roman Empire.
  • 295 ➡ First partition of the Roman Empire.
  • 395 ➡ Partition of the Roman Empire into the Empire of the West and the East; Eastern Bosnia is attached to Byzantium.
  • 6th century ➡ Arrival of the Slavs.
  • 800 ➡ The Balkans are entirely populated by Slavs.
  • 10th century ➡ State embryos by Slavic princes and appearance of the word "Bosnia".
  • 1018 ➡ Byzantine domination.
  • 10th to 12th century ➡ Kingdom of Bosnia. It is the golden age of the kingdom of Bosnia with, more particularly, the reign of Kulin Ban.
  • 12th century ➡ Appearance of the Bogomiles, a Christian Gnostic movement from Bulgaria.
  • 1180 ➡ Herzegovina is briefly integrated into the Serbian empire of the Nemanjić.
  • 1189 ➡ The oath of Kulin Ban is the first document attesting to the existence of Bosnia under this name. It is written in Slavic and Bosnia is called Bosanćica.
  • 12th to 15th century ➡ Kingdom of the Bans (kings of Bosnia) under Hungarian sovereignty.
  • 1377-1391 ➡ Reign of Ban Tvrtko I. Bosnia reaches its greatest expansion, stretching from the Sava to Dalmatia.
  • 1386 ➡ First Ottoman invasion.
  • 1435 ➡ Constitution of the independent Duchy of Herzegovina.
  • 1463 ➡ First annexation by the Ottomans, to the east.
  • 16th century ➡ Arrival of the first Sephardic Jews fleeing Spain, Portugal and the south of France.
  • 1592 ➡ Fall of Bihać. Bosnia and Herzegovina is entirely Ottoman.
  • 1697 ➡ Prince Eugene of Savoy arrives in front of Sarajevo, after several battles against the Ottomans. He is quickly beaten.
  • 1699 ➡ Treaty of Karlowitz which confirms Bosnia as the western province of the Ottoman Empire.
  • 1831 ➡ First major revolt against the Ottomans.
  • 1875 ➡ Great uprising in Herzegovina. Causes Serbia and Russia to enter the war against the Ottomans.
  • 1878 ➡ The Berlin Congress places Bosnia under the sovereignty of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
  • 1908 ➡ Annexation by the Habsburgs.
  • 1914 ➡ June 28: assassination in Sarajevo of Crown Prince Franz Ferdinand. Beginning of the First World War.
  • 1918 ➡ December 1: integration into the independent kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
  • 1929 ➡ Transformation of this kingdom into the first state of Yugoslavia.
  • 1941 ➡ German invasion. Annexation, as a province, to the fascist Croatian Ustasha state.
  • 1945 ➡ Creation of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia by Tito. Bosnia and Herzegovina becomes one of the six republics.
  • 1968 ➡ Muslims (Bosnians) are recognized as a constituent people.
  • 1974 ➡ New Constitution and creation of a tripartite presidency.
  • 1992 ➡ March 1: the "yes" wins 62% in the independence referendum, but the Bosnian Serbs boycotted the ballot. April 6: start of the war.
  • 1995 ➡ November 21: conclusion of the Dayton accords and end of the war. Bosnia is independent and made up of two autonomous entities.
  • 2002 ➡ Bosnia becomes the 44th member of the Council of Europe
  • 2004 ➡ December: European peace troops (Eufor) replace SFOR in order to maintain peace and stability in the country.
  • 2006 ➡ Bosnia joins NATO's Partnership for Peace (PPP) in December, the first step towards possible NATO membership.
  • 2008 ➡ Arrest of Radovan Karažić, ex-Bosnian Serb leader after twelve years on the run.
  • 2011 ➡ Arrest of Radko Mladić, former military leader of the Bosnian Serbs.
  • 2014 ➡ May: gigantic floods ravage the north of the country. October: the Social Democratic Party, in power since 2010, loses the elections.
  • 2016 ➡ February: the country officially applies for the EU. March: TPY sentences former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžić to 40 years in prison for various crimes against humanity, including the Srebrenica massacre.
  • 2017 ➡ November 22: Ratko Mladić is sentenced by the TPY to life imprisonment, notably for his role in the Srebrenica massacre and the siege of Sarajevo.
  • 2018 ➡ September: presidential and legislative elections. A decisive vote for the future of the country.
