The French Southern and Antarctic Territories have been, since the law of August 6, 1955, an overseas territory endowed with administrative and financial autonomy.
The French Southern and Antarctic Lands (Taaf) are made up of:
the Crozet archipelago[edit | edit source]
The Crozet Islands (340 km²) are made up of five volcanic islands. The highest culminates at 1,050 m.
the Kerguelen archipelago[edit | edit source]
The archipelago, covering an area of approximately 7,215 km², consists of a main island, Grande Terre surrounded by more than 300 islands and satellite islets
Saint-Paul and Amsterdam islands[edit | edit source]
The district of Saint-Paul and Amsterdam is located in the southern Indian Ocean, it is made up of two islands about 85 kilometers apart
Adélie land[edit | edit source]
The Terre Adélie district is located on the Antarctic continent and forms an angular sector (432,000 km²) of ice cap between the 136th and 142nd meridians of east longitude.
the scattered islands (since the law of February 21, 2007)[edit | edit source]
The name of Scattered Islands covers a group of five islands, Bassas da India, Europa, Juan de Nova, Glorieuses in the Mozambique Channel and Tromelin, located in the north of Réunion.
