Gibraltar Timeline

Date Event
1914 - 1918 World War I - Gibraltar was used for collecting convoys and submarine operations.
1918 HMS Britannia was torpedoed in the Straits by the German submarine U50, hundreds of people were killed.
1939–1945 World War II. Gibraltar is again used for collecting convoys and as a base for anti-submarine operations. It is the main base for the launch of the British and American campaign in North Africa.
1940 The entire population of Gibraltar, with the exception of a few essential employees, were evacuated to the United Kingdom, Madeira, Northern Ireland, French Morocco and Jamaica. Great work to dig tunnels carried out by British and Canadian engineers.
1941 The German submarine U81 torpedoed the Ark Royal 25 miles east of Gibraltar.
1941–1944 Airstrip built on the Northern Front with rock extracted from the tunnels.
1942 Operation Torch. General D. Eisenhower leads the landing of North Africa from a tunnel in Gibraltar.
1943 General Waladyslaw Sikorski dies in a plane crash in Gibraltar.
