1879 | founding of the Agrarian League to protect farmers threatened with eviction. |

1916 | great insurrection in Dublin, proclamation of the Republic. |
1918 | victory for Sinn Fรฉin in the legislative elections. |
1919-1921 | Anglo-Irish conflict followed by the ratification of the Anglo-Irish treaty. |
1920 | November 21, first Bloody Sunday, in the grounds of Croke Park stadium in Dublin. The British army enters the stadium during the Gaelic football final, shoots the crowd and kills 13 people. |
1922 | birth of the Irish Free State. |
1922-1923 | civil war. |
1926 | foundation of Fianna Fail by Eamon De Valera. |
1932 | De Valera becomes president. |
1937 | new Irish Constitution. |
1948 | Ireland becomes an independent republic. |
1968 | first clashes in Londonderry. |

1992 | Dublin is proclaimed cultural capital of Europe. |

1997 | election of Mary McAleese as President of the Republic; Bertie Ahern becomes Prime Minister. |
1999 | the euro is introduced in Ireland for all transactions in checks, bank cards, direct debits. |
January 1, 2002 | becoming the official currency, the euro replaces the Irish pound in Eire. The pound sterling remains the currency of Northern Ireland. |
October 2002 | after rejecting the Treaty of Nice in 2001, the Irish say "yes" by referendum to the Europe of 25. |
2004 | from January 1 to June 30, Ireland presides over the European Union. |
October 1, 2004 | Mary McAleese is re-elected as President of the Republic of Ireland. |
July 28, 2005 | the IRA (Irish Republican Army) officially renounces the armed struggle. |
2008 | the real estate bubble bursts. |
June 12, 2008 | Ireland is the only country to vote by referendum on the Treaty of Lisbon, ersatz of the treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe, abandoned in 2005. The "no" wins at 53.4% . |
November 2010 | financial assistance plan from the IMF and the European Union. |
October 27, 2011 | presidential elections which saw the nomination of Michael D. Higgins of the Labor Party as head of state. |
May 31, 2012 | a constitutional referendum on the European Fiscal Pact brought together the Irish. The "yes" wins at 60%. |
2013 | Ireland takes the reins of the European Union for the seventh time. Also the fortieth anniversary of its accession to the EU. |
June 2013 | the G8 summit is held near the town of Enniskillen (Northern Ireland). |
December 2013 | exit from the European Union and IMF aid program. |
April 2014 | historic visit by Irish President Higgins to Elizabeth II. |
October 2014 | major demonstrations to denounce the reform which puts an end to free running water in Ireland. |
May 22, 2015 | Ireland is the first country in the world to vote by referendum to legalize same-sex marriage (with 62%). |
February 26, 2016 | failure of the outgoing coalition in the legislative elections. |
August 2016 | Tim Cook, the boss of Apple, must repay 13 billion euros in tax benefits to the Irish Treasury. |
September 2016 | Thousands of people march in Dublin in favor of abortion. |
June 14, 2017 | appointment of Lรฉo Varadkar as Prime Minister. |
December 4, 2017 | agreement between Apple and Dublin on the refund of tax arrears. |
May 25, 2018 | legalization of voluntary termination of pregnancy (with 66.4% approval by referendum). |
25-26 August 2018 | visit of Pope Francis to Ireland. |
October 26, 2018 | Irish presidential election, Michael D. Higgins is re-elected. |
