2500-1520 BC AD Kushite kingdom of Kerma.
1520-1100 BC AD Egyptian domination of Nubia.
760-747 BC AD Reign of Kashta, king of Kush and proclaimed pharaoh after his conquest of Upper Egypt.
760-656 BC AD XXVth Egyptian dynasty, known as the "Black Pharaohs".
690-664 BC AD Reign of Taharqa.
590 BC AD Bag of Napata by the Egyptians.
3rd century BC. AD Relocation of the Kushite capital to Meroe.
1st century BC. AD - 2nd century AD. J.-C Roman domination of Egypt. Exploration of the upper Nile valley by the Romans.
350 apr. AD Plunder of Meroe by the Ethiopians of the kingdom of Axum.
From Christian Sudan to Muslim Sudan
6th century First Christian kingdoms in the Sudan.
7th century Islamization of Egypt.
1323 Conversion of the kingdom of Makourie to Islam.
1484 Foundation of the Founj de Sennar sultanate.
1517 The Ottomans take control of the Sudanese coast.

Anglo-Egyptian domination[edit | edit source]

1821 End of the Sennar sultanate. Mohamed-Ali's Egypt annexed Gezira and Kordofan.
1824 Foundation of Khartoum.
1885 Capture of Khartoum by the Mahdist armies. Omdurman Foundation.
1898 End of the Mahdist state. Fachoda crisis between France and England.
1899 Establishment of the Anglo-Egyptian condominium on the Sudan.
1916 End of the sultanate of Darfur, integrated into the condominium.
1947 Juba Conference. Sudan obtains its current borders. The South is united with the North and open to its influence.
1951 Egyptian King Farouk proclaims himself sovereign of Egypt and Sudan.
1953 Agreement on the self-determination of Sudan between Egypt of Nasser and the United Kingdom.

Independent Sudan[edit | edit source]

1956 Independence of the Republic of Sudan. Beginning of the civil war in the South.
1958 Coup d'Etat by General Abboud.
1969 Coup d'Etat by General Nimeiry.
1970 Impoundment of Lake Nasser. Thousands of Nubians are forced to leave their villages.
1972 Addis Ababa Agreement ending the civil war.
1978 Discovery of oil deposits.
1983 Application of the sharia in the country. Resumption of the rebellion in the South.
1985 End of the Nimeiry regime.
1986 First general multiparty elections. Sadiq al-Mahdi becomes Prime Minister.
1989 Coup d'Etat by General Al-Bashir.
1997 The United States places Sudan under embargo.
1999 First oil exports.
2003-2004 Massacres in Darfur.
2005 Signature of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between Khartoum and the southern rebellion.
2009 Indictment of President Omar al-Bashir by the International Criminal Court. Inauguration of the great Merowe dam.
2010 Presidential, legislative and provincial elections.
2011 Self-determination referendum in South Sudan.
