History of Palau (also named "Palaos" or "Belau")[edit | edit source]

  • Discovered by Villalobos in 1543, Palau was Spanish possession until 1899.
  • The archipelago, bought by the Germans, then placed under Japanese mandate from 1919 to 1945, was entrusted in 1947 to the United States by the UN and, until 'in 1986, included in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTIP).
  • In 1978, Palau refused to be part of the federation of Micronesia and became, a few years later, an autonomous republic "freely associated" (semi-independent) in the United States.
  • The archipelago became fully independent in October 1994 and was then admitted to the UN in December of the same year.
  • The United States, however, remains responsible for its defense for a period of 50 years and provides financial assistance until 2025.
