10,000 BC AD | arrival of the first aborigines Orang Asli. |
5,000 BC AD | arrival of the first "Malays" from Sumatra (Indonesia). |
1st century | arrival of the first Indians, traders from high castes. |
3rd century | first contacts with Chinese traders. |
4th century | the Malays are "Hindu". |
7th century | Malaysia falls under the domination of the kingdom of Srivijaya of Sumatra, which extends its borders to Cambodia. |
1403 | a prince of Srivijaya, Iskander Shah, settles in Malacca. |
1437 | the third raja of Malacca converts to Islam, which spreads very quickly in Malaysia. |
Successive colonizations: from the Portuguese to the British[edit | edit source] | |
1511 | Alfonso de Albuquerque seizes Malacca. |
1515 | death of Alfonso. |
1641 | the Dutch seize Malacca. |
1826 | formation of the Straits Settlements which includes Penang, Malacca and Singapore. |

1896 | formation of a Federation of Malaysian States. |

1909 | enlargement of the Federation by the Anglo-Siamese treaty |
1914 | new extension of the Federation. |
December 8, 1941 | Japanese invasion. |
August 14, 1945 | Japanese surrender. |
August 31, 1957 | independence of Malaysia. The United Malays National Organization (UMNO) is the ruling party. |
August 31, 1963 | extension of the Federation of Malaysia, enlarged by Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak. |
August 9, 1965 | Singapore is expelled from the Federation. |
May 13, 1969 | race riots in Kuala Lumpur. May 13 is remembered as an event that should never be repeated. |
1981 | Dr Mahathir Muhammad is elected Prime Minister. |
1986 | Muslim riots in the state of Sabah. |
1993 | some of the privileges of the 9 sultans are removed. |
Growth and crises[edit | edit source] | |
1996 | new record for economic growth (8.4%). Closure of the last Vietnamese camp. |
1997-1998 | the crisis hits South Asia and hits the country hard, causing a recession and forcing it to abandon many projects (airports, highways, etc.) planned in the country for the 2000s. |
1999 | Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister of Mahathir Mohamad, more liberal than the latter, is sentenced to 6 years in prison for sodomy and attempted corruption. |
2000 | Filipino pirates from the Abu Sayaf group take tourists hostage in the southeast of the state of Sabah (East Malaysia). |
2001 | rising political opposition, in particular the new Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS). |
2004 | the March 2004 elections confirm the predominance of UMNO, the party of the new Prime Minister, Abdullah Badawi. Only one state, Kelantan, remains under the control of the Islamist opposition. |
2008 | early elections see the enthronement as Prime Minister of Najib Tun Razak, son of Tun Abdul Razak, the second Prime Minister of independent Malaysia. |
2011 | the demonstrations of the Bersih ("Clean") movement paralyze the streets of KL and call for clean elections in 2013. The opposition parties unite against the UMNO, a party in their eyes more and more corrupt and removed from the concerns of part of the po |
2013 | the irruption of an armed group claiming to be from the Sulu Sultanate in Lahad Datu, on the east coast of Sabah, plunges the Malaysian authorities into indecision. The group is finally subdued, not without causing the death of several Malaysian policemen |
2014 | 2 air tragedies four months apart brought mourning to Malaysia Airlines. On March 7, 2014, a Malaysia Airlines aircraft mysteriously disappeared with 239 people on board. The Boeing 777-200 MH370 connecting Kuala Lumpur to Beijing has still not been found |
