  • 1972 - Jigme Singye Wangchuk, absolute monarch who has just ascended to the throne, mentions for the first time Gross National Happiness (BNB), an index enabling the quality of life of his subjects to be measured.
  • 1974 - For the first time, the country opens up to tourists, albeit on a very limited basis.
  • 1990 - Wearing the national costume becomes compulsory. Repression of a revolt by the Nepalese minority, which demands more rights.
  • 1991 - 100,000 people of Nepalese origin flee the country.
  • 1999 - Launch of the first television channel.
  • 2005 - The monarch promulgates an edict announcing the democratic transition.
  • 2006 - He decides to abdicate in favor of his son, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk.
  • 2008 - The first legislative elections are organized. The country has its first democratic constitution.
  • 2013 - Legislative elections. The democratic exercise continues.
