Albania Timeline

  • 2nd millennium BC: appearance of the Illyrians structured into around thirty tribes
  • 7th century BC: appearance of Greek colonies
  • 3rd and 2nd centuries BC: conquest then Roman occupation
  • 395 AD: division of the Roman Empire, the Illyricum is handed over to the authorities of Constantinople,
  • 4th and 6th centuries: different waves of invasion in the Balkans
  • 6th century: the Illyricum divided into several provinces then invaded by the Antes, the Huns, the Lombards and especially the Slavs
  • 1190: constitution of a principality of Albania with Kruja for capital (north of Tirana)
  • XIIIth century: this space becomes a battlefield and is seen occupied by different powers (Bulgarians, Serbs, Epirots, Venetians, Angevins) without any of them succeeding in uniting the Albanian people under the same banner, which comes to divide into antagonistic clans
  • 1385: the Ottoman Empire invades most of Albania
  • 1443: Skanderbeg raises a powerful army and manages to repel the Ottoman invasion.
  • 1468: death of Skanderbeg
  • 1506: Albania is entirely conquered by the Ottomans, the beginning of a massive Islamization which will not reach the regions of the South and the North.
  • 1555: First work written in Albanian by Gjon Buzuku (Catholic prayer missal) published in Italy.
  • End of the XIXth century: the conscience of national belonging tries to be awakened by the intellectuals of the "Albanian Renaissance", at the same time as the power of the Ottoman Empire begins to decline and that the neighboring countries gain little by little their respective independence
  • 1872: First translation of the New Testament into Albanian by Kostandin Kristoferidhi, from Elbasan.
  • 1878: the Prizren League brings together nearly 80 intellectuals trying to rise up against the declared “arbitrary” definition of the geographical borders of Albania (treaties of San Stefano and Berlin).
  • 1891: the Prizren league is dissolved by the Ottoman armed forces
  • 1908: Congress of Manastir, creation of an alphabet adapted to the Albanian language
  • 1912: Ismail Qemal Bej declares the independence of Albania and becomes head of the provisional government. Capital in Vlora.
  • 1913: independence of Albania recognized by the Western States during the Conference of Ambassadors in London.
  • 1914: German Prince William de Wied provisionally obtains the throne of Albania.
  • 1916: a stronghold of the French army settles in the region of Korça and helps its inhabitants to constitute an independent Republic (until 1919, after demobilization of this army and under neighboring Greek pressure). Creation in 1916 of the French lycée in Korça.
  • 1920: Italy obtains an exclusive management mandate on Albanian territory.
  • 1925: presidency then self-proclaimed monarchy of Ahmet Zogu.
  • 1939: World War II breaks out, Italy invades Albania, King Zog I is forced to flee, to Spain, then finds refuge in France. He died there in 1961, his remains were repatriated in 2012. The French high school in Korça was closed by the Italians, the French teachers sent back to France.
  • 1941: creation of the Albanian Communist Party, later the Labor Party, by Enver Hoxha.
  • 1944: the armed forces organized by Enver Hoxha scare the Germans away. Albania has taken back its lands, it becomes the only country not to have relied on any foreign aid to achieve liberation.
  • 1946: Creation of the People's Republic of Albania, presidency of Enver Hoxha for seven consecutive five-year terms (prohibition of multiparty politics and no authorized opponent).
  • 1967: Launch of revolutionization, and opening of the fight against religions
  • 1978: after periods of friendship with Yugoslavia, the USSR and China, Enver Hoxha decrees the withdrawal of Albania into itself, which no longer has any contact with the outside.
  • 1985: Enver Hoxha dies.
  • 1991: Fall of the Communist regime; Albania is experiencing a transition from a planned economy to a market economy, generating a severe economic crisis, while the population, being able to cross the borders freely, emigrates en masse, mainly to Italy, Greece and the United States.
  • 1997: civil demonstrations which occur after the collapse of the investment companies with pyramidal structure.
  • 1999: conflict in Kosovo, thousands of Kosovar refugees arrive in Albania, supported by the population.
  • 2003: negotiations between Albania and the EU with a view to concluding an association and stabilization agreement, the first stage of the accession process.
  • 2006: signing between Albania and the EU of a stabilization and association agreement, a prelude to the country's possible accession to the EU
  • 2007: George W Bush becomes the first US President to pay an official visit to Albania (several roads will bear his name)
  • 2009: Albania becomes a member of NATO
  • 2014 (June): Albania receives the status of candidate for EU membership, this is its fourth official request.
  • March 24, 2020 : Foreign ministers of EU member states give green light for the opening of accession negotiations with Albania
