1914 - 1918 | World War I - Gibraltar was used for collecting convoys and submarine operations. |
1918 | HMS Britannia was torpedoed in the Straits by the German submarine U50, hundreds of people were killed. |
1939–1945 | World War II. Gibraltar is again used for collecting convoys and as a base for anti-submarine operations. It is the main base for the launch of the British and American campaign in North Africa. |
1940 | The entire population of Gibraltar, with the exception of a few essential employees, were evacuated to the United Kingdom, Madeira, Northern Ireland, French Morocco and Jamaica. Great work to dig tunnels carried out by British and Canadian engineers. |
1941 | The German submarine U81 torpedoed the Ark Royal 25 miles east of Gibraltar. |
1941–1944 | Airstrip built on the Northern Front with rock extracted from the tunnels. |
1942 | Operation Torch. General D. Eisenhower leads the landing of North Africa from a tunnel in Gibraltar. |
