The main dates of the conquest of Antarctica
- In Antiquity, the Greeks were the first to hypothesize a vast land to the south in "opposition" to the existence of the northern continents.
- 1773: James Cook is the first explorer to cross the , without approaching land.
- 1820: Nathaniel Palmer, Edward Bransfield and William Smith arrive in sight of the Antarctic continent.
- 1840: 3 expeditions, led by d'Urville, Ross and Wilkes, establish that the observed ice lands form a continent.
- 1895: Carsten Borchgrevink and his crew land in , at . They spend an entire winter there.
- 1907-1909: Ernest Schackleton tries to reach the South Pole. He failed after having traveled inland.
- 1911: Amundsen plants the Norwegian flag at the South Pole, aAfter 57 days of travel.
- 1928: first flight over by George Wilkins.
- 1947: the organized a gigantic expedition of 4000 people, 13 boats and 23 planes made it possible to map large sections of the coast.
- 1957: scientific cooperation is established to unravel the mysteries of Antarctica.During the International Geophysical Year,
- 1961: signed 2 years in 1959 by 12 countries, the Antarctic Treaty comes into force.
- 1965: start of tourism in with Lars-Eric Lindblad.
- 1991: the Treaty nations in accept the Environmental Protection Protocol.
