Timeline of Aruba
- 1499: Alonso d'Ojeda, Spanish explorer lands on the island of Aruba.
- 1636: Aruba becomes a colony of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
- 1799-1802 and 1805-1816: The British land and live with the Dutch.
- 1942-1945: The British leave the island of Aruba to the United States.
- 1948: The Dutch crown accepts the principle of self-determination for Aruba.
- 1954: Aruba and the other Netherlands Antilles.
- 1955: The first constitution of Aruba is established.
- 1976: The flag and the anthem of Aruba are adopted.
- Since 1980: Queen Beatrix II is president of the island.
