History of Anguilla

The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus during his second expedition in 1493. The island is called Anguilla because its elongated shape can be compared to an eel. The island was then colonized by the British around 1650 and developed the sugar industry through slavery.

Slavery was abolished in 1834 and the British owners returned to England. Today the economy of Anguilla is based on traditional activities such as fishing, cattle breeding, salt production but above all thanks to luxury tourism. Since 1995 Anguilla has been associated with the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.
