The subject-verb agreement in French is the way to choose the correct ending for verbs in terms of grammatical persons, gender and number, depending on their subject.

Verbs are Plural[edit | edit source]
Verbs are usually plural when the fraction is the subject of the sentence and it refers to a plural noun:
- Le cinquième (des étudiants) ont échoué à l'examen
A 5th (of the students) have failed the exam
- La moitié (des motos) ont dépassé la vitesse limite
Half (of motorcycles) exceeded the speed limit
- Un tiers (des personnes) sont endettées
A 3rd (of people) are in debt
Verbs are Singular[edit | edit source]
Verbs are singular when fractions are subjects of the sentence and it refers to a singular noun:
- La moitié (du trimestre) est déjà passée
Half (of the quarter) has already passed
- Un tiers (du articles) reste à écrire
A 3rd (of the articles) remains to be written
