French Translations for Common English Prepositions

Introduction[edit | edit source]

Prepositions are small words that help us connect ideas and clarify their relationships. In this lesson, we'll go over the French equivalents for some of the most commonly used English prepositions.

Common English Prepositions and Their French Equivalents[edit | edit source]

Here is a list of some common English prepositions, along with their French equivalents and example sentences:

  • Above - au-dessus
    • The bird is flying above the trees. (L'oiseau vole au-dessus des arbres.)
  • After - après
    • She arrived after me. (Elle est arrivée après moi.)
  • Against - contre
    • She voted against the proposal. (Elle a voté contre la proposition.)
  • Around - autour
    • We walked around the park. (Nous avons marché autour du parc.)
  • Before - avant
    • Call me before you leave. (Appelle-moi avant de partir.)
  • Below - au-dessous
    • The cat is hiding below the table. (Le chat se cache au-dessous de la table.)
  • Between - entre
    • He is sitting between his parents. (Il est assis entre ses parents.)
  • Beyond - au-delà
    • Beyond the mountains, there's another village. (Au-delà des montagnes, il y a un autre village.)
  • During - pendant
    • She slept during the flight. (Elle a dormi pendant le vol.)
  • Except - sauf
    • Everyone is coming except John. (Tout le monde vient sauf John.)
  • For - pour
    • This gift is for you. (Ce cadeau est pour toi.)
  • In - dans
    • I am in the house. (Je suis dans la maison.)
  • Like - comme
    • She sings like an angel. (Elle chante comme un ange.)
  • Of - de
    • The King of France (Le roi de France)
  • On - sur
    • The book is on the table. (Le livre est sur la table.)
  • Under - sous
    • The dog is under the table. (Le chien est sous la table.)
  • With - avec
    • She is with her friends. (Elle est avec ses amis.)

Translate the following sentences into French.

1. The cat is under the bed.

2. He is walking around the lake.

3. The gift is for her.
