Subject-Verb Agreement

The subject-verb agreement in French is the way to choose the correct ending for verbs in terms of grammatical persons, gender and number, depending on their subject.

Verb agreement with fractions

Verbs are Plural

Verbs are usually plural when the fraction is the subject of the sentence and it refers to a plural noun:

  • Le cinquième (des étudiants) ont échoué à l'examen

A 5th (of the students) have failed the exam

  • La moitié (des motos) ont dépassé la vitesse limite

Half (of motorcycles) exceeded the speed limit

  • Un tiers (des personnes) sont endettées

A 3rd (of people) are in debt

Verbs are Singular

Verbs are singular when fractions are subjects of the sentence and it refers to a singular noun:

  • La moitié (du trimestre) est déjà passée

Half (of the quarter) has already passed

  • Un tiers (du articles) reste à écrire

A 3rd (of the articles) remains to be written
