Formation of Future Tense Verbs
The future tense in Malayalam is formed by adding specific markers to the end of the root verb. These markers indicate who is performing the action and when it will happen in the future.
Here are the future tense markers for the three persons:
- First person (I/we) - എനിക്ക്/ഞാന് (ennikku/nyan)
- Second person (you) - നിങ്ങള് (ningal)
- Third person (he/she/it/they) - അവന്/അവള്/അവര് (avan/aval/avar)
To form the future tense: 1. Take the root verb 2. Attach the relevant future tense marker as per subject 3. Add the word ആയിരിക്കും (aayirikkum) at the end
Let's see how to form the future tense of the verb "to speak" for all three persons:
Person | Verb | Future Tense |
---|---|---|
First Person Singular | ഞാന് പറയും | ഞാന് പറയുകയാണ് ആയിരിക്കും (nyan parayum, nyan parayukayaan aayirikkum) |
Second Person Singular | നീ പറയും | നീ പറയുകയാണ് ആയിരിക്കും (nee parayum, nee parayukayaan aayirikkum) |
Third Person Singular | അവന്/അവള്/അവര് പറയും | അവന്/അവള്/അവര് പറയുകയാണ് ആയിരിക്കും (avan/aval/avar parayum, avan/aval/avar parayukayaan aayirikkum) |
Note the use of "ആയിരിക്കും (aayirikkum)" which translate to "will be" in English to signify the future tense.
