Meaning of alors in French
alors has two distinct adverbial uses.
Time Adverb[edit | edit source]
One as a time adverb meaning 'then, at that time':
- Il était alors directeur d'une petite agence immobilière en province
At that time he was the manager of an estate agency in a small town
In this use it can appear in the middle of a clause, as in the above example.
So[edit | edit source]
Its other use is as a sentence-modifying adverb meaning 'so', which occurs at the beginning of a clause. This use is as frequent in spoken French as 'so' is in spoken English:
- Alors, quoi de neuf?
So, what's new?
- Alors, qu'est-ce que tu en penses?
So, what do you think about it?
