Information Questions in French Grammar

Introduction

Information questions in French are questions that seek to obtain information beyond a simple 'yes' or 'no'. These questions often begin with question words like qui (who), que (what), où (where), etc. This lesson will guide you through the various types of information questions in French.

1. Question Words

French has several question words that correspond to the "Wh-" questions in English. Some common ones include:

• Qui - Who
• Que - What
• Où - Where
• Quand - When
• Pourquoi - Why
• Comment - How

2. Question Word + Est-ce que

You can combine question words with est-ce que to form questions.

• Example: Où est-ce que tu vas ? (Where are you going?)

3. Inversion

Inversion can also be used with question words for a more formal tone.

• Example: Pourquoi as-tu mangé ? (Why did you eat?)

4. Direct Question Form

Sometimes, you can directly use the question word at the beginning of the sentence, especially in spoken French.
