In French, certain verbs require an infinitive complement. This quick reference index aims to provide an at-a-glance guide to verbs that commonly take infinitive complements.
Verbs without a Preposition
These verbs are followed directly by an infinitive, with no preposition in between.
vouloir, devoir, pouvoir, savoir, préférer, aller
Verbs Preceded by "à"
These verbs are followed by the preposition "à" and then the infinitive.
aider à, apprendre à, continuer à, hésiter à
Verbs Preceded by "de"
These verbs require the preposition "de" before the infinitive.
décider de, essayer de, promettre de, refuser de
