Malayalam Vocabulary → Everyday Phrases → Greetings and Introductions

As a Malayalam teacher with over 20 years of experience, I have seen the struggles that beginners often face when learning how to greet people in Malayalam and introduce themselves and others. In this lesson, we will cover some basic everyday phrases that you can use to make a great impression while communicating in Malayalam. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to greet someone in Malayalam with confidence and introduce yourself and others in a clear and effective manner.

Common Greetings in Malayalam

When greeting someone in Malayalam, it is important to be respectful and courteous. Here are some common ways to greet someone in Malayalam:

  • Namaskaaram - (नमस्कारम / வணக்கம் / നമസ്കാരം) - This is the most common greeting used in Malayalam. It is similar to the Hindi greeting 'Namaste'. It is a formal way of saying hello or welcome.
  • Vanakkam - (வணக்கம்) - This is also a common way to welcome someone in Malayalam.
  • Namaskaram aayiṭuṁ - (നമസ്കാരം ആയിടും) - This is a formal Malayalam greeting and translates to "I offer my respectful greetings to you".
  • Namaskaram - Na njaṇaṁ Niṅṅa vishayatu (നമസ്കാരം - നാൻ ഞാനാണ് നിങ്ങയുടെ വിഷയത്തിൽ) - This translates to "Hello, I am your's truly" and is a polite way to introduce oneself.

Introducing Yourself

When introducing yourself in Malayalam, it is important to use the right tone and language to convey respect. Here are some examples of how you can introduce yourself in Malayalam:

  • Enikku ..(name).. ariyilla. (എനിക്ക് ..(പേര്).. അറിയില്ല) - This means "I am not known to you" and is a polite way of saying that you are a stranger.
  • Enikku ..(name).. anugrahikkatte. (എനിക്ക് ..(പേര്).. അനുഗ്രഹിക്കട്ടെ) - This translates to "Please grant me your grace" and is a formal way of introducing oneself.
  • Njan ..(name).. ine pole oru samayam orikkalum marichu pokilla. (ഞാൻ ..(പേര്).. ഇനേ പോലെ ഒരു സമയം ഒരിക്കലും മറിച്ചുപോകില്ല) - This translates to "I will never forget your name" and is a confident and friendly way of introducing oneself.

Introducing Others

Introducing others in Malayalam is an important skill, especially when you want to facilitate communication between two people. Here are some examples:

  • ..(name1).. enna ..(name2)..-e kandathil njanu nannayirikkunnu. (..(പേര് 1).. എന്ന ..(പേര് 2)..-എ കണ്ടതിൽ ഞാൻ നന്നായിരിക്കുന്നു) - This means "I am happy to see you meet ..(name2).." and is a polite way of introducing people.
  • Enikku ..(name1).. muthale ..(name2)..-ine poraalku kondu varanam. (എനിക്ക് ..(പേര് 1).. മുതലെ ..(പേര് 2).. ഇനെപ്പോൾമുപ്പിക്കേണ്ടുന്നു എന്ന് അറിയിക്കുക) - This means "I need to bring ..(name2).. to meet ..(name1).." and is used when introducing someone to another person.

Conclusion

Learning common greetings and introductions in Malayalam is an essential first step in communicating effectively with people who speak the language. Practice these phrases and use them whenever you get a chance to engage in conversation with speakers of Malayalam. With patience and practice, you will soon be able to speak Malayalam with confidence and ease.
