Malayalam Vocabulary - Colors

In this lesson, we will learn the vocabulary for colors in Malayalam. Colors are important in everyday life, and knowing how to describe them can be very useful. Learning colors in Malayalam will help you to better understand conversations around you and to express yourself better. Let's get started!

Basic colors[edit | edit source]

Let's start with the most basic colors.

പച്ച (pacha) /pəttʃa/ Green
നീല (neela) /niːɭa/ Blue
വെള്ള (vell) /ʋəɭɭa/ White
കാര (kaara) /kɑːɾa/ Black
കാക്ക (kaakka) /kɑːkːa/ Brown
മഞ്ഞ (mann) /məɲɲa/ Yellow
ചെമ്പ് (chembu) /t͡ʃemp/ Red
താമര (thaamar) /t̪aːmərə/ Brown (dark)
വെളിച്ചം (velicham) /ʋeɭit͡ʃːəm/ Light
കൂടുതൽ വെള്ളം (kooduthal vellam) /kuːɖut̪aɭ ʋəɭɭəm/ Off-white

In Malayalam, colors are mostly named based on objects or nature. For instance, പച്ച (pacha) means green, and it is named after the leaves of plants.

Shades[edit | edit source]

When we refer to different shades of the same color, we can use the following terms.

Malayalam Pronunciation English
ഹിമം വെള്ളം (himam vellam) /hɪməm ʋəɭɭəm/ Off-white
ഉജ്ജലം (ujjalam) /ud͡ʒːələm/ Bright
വിവിധ നിറം (vividha nirnam) /ʋiʋiða nɪram/ Multicolored

For instance, if you want to refer to a pale shade of green, you can say ഹിമം പച്ച (himam pacha).

Advanced colors[edit | edit source]

Some of the more advanced colors that are not used very often are listed below.

മഞ്ഞിപ്പ് (mannyipp) /mənnɪpp/ Dull yellow
സംഗീനിക (sangeenika) /səŋɡiːnikə/ Purple
മിഴികനീല (mizhikaneela) /mɪd͡ʒɪkəniːɭa/ Azure
മഞ്ഞിപ്പൂവ് നിറം (mannyippuuv nirnam) /mənnɪppuːv nɪram/ Mustard yellow

Dialogues[edit | edit source]

To help you see how these colors can be used in sentences, here are some dialogues.

  • Person 1: ഞാൻ നീല ഒന്നു വേണം (naan neela onnu venam) (I want one blue)
  • Person 2: താങ്കൾക്ക് മഞ്ഞ മൂന്നു കൂടാതെ തന്നിട്ടുണ്ട് (thaangalkku mannyu moonnu koodaathe thannittundu) (We don't have more than two yellows for you)
  • Person 1: ഞാൻ സംഗീനിക ഉഷ്ണം പോലെ ഒരു അളവ് വേണം (naan sangeenika ushnamm pole oru alavu venam) (I want a shade of purple like heat)
  • Person 2: ഇത് പച്ച തുറന്ന പൂവിന്റെ നിറം (ith pacha thuranna poovinte niram) (This is the color of an open flower)
