'І' (And)

The conjunction 'і' is used to connect words, phrases, or clauses that are similar or related in meaning. It is the equivalent of the English conjunction 'and'. Here are a few examples:

Вона говорить і пише	Vóna hovóryt' i pyše	She speaks and writes

'Але' (But)

The conjunction 'але' is used to connect words, phrases, or clauses that express contrast or opposition. It is the equivalent of the English conjunction 'but'. Here are a few examples:

Я люблю футбол, але не граю	Ya lyublyu fútbol, ále ne hráyu	I love football, but I don't play
Вона розумна, але лінива	Vóna rozúmna, ále línyva	She is smart, but lazy

'Або' (Or)

The conjunction 'або' is used to present alternative choices or options. It is the equivalent of the English conjunction 'or'. Here are a few examples:

Якщо не сьогодні, то завтра або післязавтра	Yakshcho ne s'ogodní, to závtra ábo písl'yazávtra	If not today, then tomorrow or the day after tomorrow
Вибери книгу або фільм	Vyberí knýhu ábo fílm	Choose a book or a movie

'Тому що' (Because)

The conjunction 'тому що' is used to introduce a reason or cause. It is the equivalent of the English conjunction 'because'. Here are a few examples:

Я йду додому, тому що втомився	Ya ídu dodómu, tómu shcho vtomývsya	I am going home because I am tired
Вона не прийшла на зустріч, тому що захворіла	Vóna ne prýyshla na zustrích, tómu shcho zakhvoríla	She didn't come to the meeting because she got sick
Ми вчимо українську, тому що хочемо подорожувати по Україні	My vchýmo ukraїnśku, tómu shcho hóchemo podrózhuváty po Ukraїní	We are learning Ukrainian because we want to travel around Ukraine

Practice Exercise

Now it's time to practice using conjunctions in sentences. Complete the following sentences by choosing the appropriate conjunction: 'і' (and), 'але' (but), 'або' (or), or 'тому що' (because).

1. Вона любить читати, __ писати. 2. Я хочу піти в кіно, __ немаю часу. 3. Хочеш чай, __ каву? 4. Я не йду на вечірку, __ не почуваюся добре. 5. Я знаю цю історію, __ чув її від свого друга. 6. Він брат мого друга, __ не знаємо один одного. 7. Я забув ключі вдома, __ повернувся назад. 8. Вона закрила вікно, __ вибачилася.
