The Ukrainian Present tense is formed by adding personal Present tense endings to the stem of the verb. The stem of the verb in the Present tense often coincides with the stem of the infinitive form of the verb, which is the form of the verb without the suffix "-ти": знати (to know) – "зна-". There are two conjugation groups of verbs in the Present tense. The difference of two conjugations is not in meaning but only in forms.

The first conjugation group has a hard and soft variety. The hard variety is when the present tense stem of the verb ends in a consonant sound  [“нести” – “нес-”]. The soft variety is when stem ends in a vowel ["знати" – “зна-”]. Here is a table of personal Present tense endings of verbs of the first conjugation group:

the verb’s stem ends in a vowel: "знати" – “зна-” the verb’s stem ends in a consonant: “нести” – “нес-”
я зна-ю я нес-у
ти зна-єш ти нес-еш
він зна-є він нес-е
вона зна-є вона нес-е
воно зна-є воно нес-е
ми зна-ємо ми нес-емо
ви зна-єте ви нес-ете
вони зна-ють вони нес-уть
