Introduction

In this lesson, we will learn how to tell time in Odia. Time is an important aspect of daily life, and being able to tell time is essential for communication and scheduling. We will cover how to express hours and minutes in Odia, as well as some cultural information and interesting facts.

Hours

In Odia, we use a 12-hour clock to tell time. The words for hours are:

Odia Pronunciation English
ଏକ 'ēka One
ଦୁଇ dui Two
ତିନି tini Three
ଚାରି chāri Four
ପାଞ୍ଚ pāñca Five
chha Six
ସାତ sāta Seven
ଆଠ āṭha Eight
ନବ naba Nine
ଦଶ daśa Ten
ଏଘାର 'ēghāra Eleven
ବାର bāra Twelve

To express time in Odia, we use the phrase "ଏହି ସମୟରେ" (ēhi samayare) before the hour.

For example:

  • ଏହି ସମୟରେ ପାଞ୍ଚ ଟାଙ୍କର ଘଣ୍ଟା ହେଉଛି। (ēhi samayare pāñca ṭāṅkara ghaṇṭā heuchi.) - It is five o'clock now.

Minutes

To express minutes, we use the words "ମିନିଟ" (miṇiṭa) and "ଘଣ୍ଟା" (ghaṇṭā) for hours. We use "ମିନିଟ" (miṇiṭa) after the number of minutes.

For example:

  • ଏହି ସମୟରେ ପାଞ୍ଚ ଓ ପାଁଚ ମିନିଟ ହୋଇଛି। (ēhi samayare pāñca ō pāṅca miṇiṭa hoichi.) - It is five past five now.
  • ଏହି ସମୟରେ ଛାଯାଏ ତିନି ଓ ପାଁଚ ମିନିଟ। (ēhi samayare chhāyāē tini ō pāṅca miṇiṭa.) - It is three fifty-five now.

We can also use the phrase "ଉପରେ" (upare) to express past the hour.

For example:

  • ଘଷିରେ ପାଞ୍ଚ ଦଶ ଉପରେ ଓ ପାଁଚ ମିନିଟ। (ghaṣirē pāñca daśa upare ō pāṅca miṇiṭa.) - It is ten past five in the evening.
