Common Health Issues[edit | edit source]

Before we start, it's important to know some common health issues that one might face. Here are some useful phrases to keep in mind:

ଜୁନ୍ଧ (jundha) juːndʰɔ fever
ଶରୀର ଦୁର୍ବଳତା (sharira durvalata) ʃɔrirɔ durbɔlɔtɔ weakness
ଚର୍ମ ରୋଗ (charma roga) tʃɔrmɔ rɔgɔ skin disease
ବିରାମ (birama) biramɔ pause/rest
କଶେରୀ (kasheri) kɔʃerɪ cough
ସ୍ୱାସ (swasa) swaːsɔ breathlessness

Example dialogue:

  • Person 1: ମୋ ପାଇଁ ଜେନ୍ତି ଲେଜିବା (mo paaini jenti lejiba) "I have a headache."
  • Person 2: ମୋତେ ଶରୀର ଦୁର୍ବଳତା ହୋଇନାହିଁ (mote sharira durvalata hoienaheeni) "I don't feel well."

ଦିନରେ ଏକ ବା ଦୁଇ ବାର ଖାଇଛି (dinare eka ba dui bara khaichi) dinɔre eka bɔ duɪ bɔrɔ kʰaɪʧi I have eaten once or twice today
ଆରାମ ନେଇଛି (arama neichhi) aːɾɔmɔ neichhi I am taking rest
ଡାକ୍ତର (daktar) dɔktɔrɔ doctor
ମେଡିସିନ (medisina) medisɪnɔ medicine
ଦରଦ (dorada) dorɔdɔ pain

Example dialogue:

  • Person 1: ମୋତେ ଦରଦହେଉଥିଲା ପେଟ୍ (mote doradhauthila petha) "I had stomach ache."
  • Person 2: ଓଠ ଲାଗିଛି ଆଭାସ ହେଉଛି ଖାଇଲେ ଡେରୋଲା (otha lagi chhi aabhaasa heuchhi khaaile derolaa) "I feel like vomit. I took [tooltip text="A medicine for vomiting" title="Tooltip onhover"]ଡେରୋଲା[/tooltip]."

Emergency Vocabulary[edit | edit source]

In case of an emergency, it's important to know some Odia phrases to communicate with emergency responders.

ପ୍ରଥମ ପଦକୁ ନକାରାତ୍ମକ ହେଲା (pratham padaku nakaraatmaka helaa) prɔthɔm pɔɖɔku nɔkaɾaːtmaka helɔ tested positive for COVID-19
ହସ୍ତୀର ପାତରେ ହସ୍ତୀର ସହୁ ମେଲାଇ ଗୋଇଛି (hastira paatere hastira sahu melai goiichi) hastira paatere hastira sahu melaaʲi voiʧi elephant accident occurred

Example dialogue:

  • Person 1: ଏହି ଶହରରେ COVID-19 ପୋଶିଟିଭ ପାଇଲେ କିମ୍ବା ନାହିଁ? (ehi sahara re COVID-19 poshitive paaila kimbha naahini?) "Did you test positive for COVID-19 in this city?"
  • Person 2: ନା, ଏହି ସମୟରେ ସମ୍ଭବ ହେଲା ନା (na ehi samayare sambhaba helaa na) "No, not at this time."
