Direct Object Pronouns
In Persian, a direct object is a noun or a pronoun that receives an action directly from the verb. To avoid repeating the noun, we can use direct object pronouns. Here are the direct object pronouns in Persian:
Persian | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
مرا | /mærɑː/ | me |
تو را | /tuː rɑː/ | you (singular) |
او را | /uː rɑː/ | him/her/it |
ما را | /mɑː rɑː/ | us |
شما را | /ʃomɑː rɑː/ | you (plural) |
آنها را | /ɒn-hɑː rɑː/ | them |
For instance, instead of saying "من کتاب را میخوانم" (man ketâb râ mikhanam) meaning "I am reading the book," we can use the direct object pronoun "آن را" (ânrâ) to say "من آن را میخوانم" (man ânrâ mikhanam) meaning "I am reading it."
Placement of Direct Object Pronouns
In Persian, direct object pronouns usually come right before the verb. Here are some examples:
- "من میوه را میخورم" (man meyve râ mikhuram) meaning "I eat the fruit" changes into "من آن را میخورم" (man ânrâ mikhuram) meaning "I eat it."
- "تو کتاب را داری؟" (to ketâb râ dâri?) meaning "Do you have the book?" changes into "تو آن را داری؟" (to ânrâ dâri?) meaning "Do you have it?"
- "او خبرنگارها را میبیند" (u khabarnegâr-hâ râ mibinad) meaning "He sees the reporters" changes into "او آنها را میبیند" (u ânhâ râ mibinad) meaning "He sees them."
Practice
Let's practice some more direct object pronouns with simple sentences:
- "من پنجههایم را میشمارم" (man panjehâyam râ mishomâram) meaning "I count my fingers" changes into "من آنها را میشمارم" (man ânhâ râ mishomâram) meaning "I count them."
- "تو دونفر را میشناسی" (to do-nafar râ mishenâsi) meaning "You know two people" changes into "تو آنها را میشناسی" (to ânhâ râ mishenâsi) meaning "You know them."
- "او هریون را انتخاب کرد" (u haryun râ entekhâb kard) meaning "He chose Harry" changes into "او را انتخاب کرد" (u râ entekhâb kard) meaning "He chose him."
Tips
- To understand whether you need to use a direct object pronoun, ask yourself what receives the action directly from the verb.
- Remember that direct object pronouns come before the verb in Persian.
