Iranian Persian Grammar - How to Use "be"

Forms of the Verb[edit | edit source]

The verb "be" in Iranian Persian has two forms: یست (yest) and هست (hast). The form یست (yest) is used for the present tense, while the form هست (hast) is used for the past tense.

Examples[edit | edit source]

Here are some examples of how the verb "be" is used in Iranian Persian:

تو هستی to hasti You are
او هست o hast He/She is
ما هستیم ma hastim We are

Here is a dialogue between two people using the verb "be":

  • Person 1: چه خبر؟ (che khabar?) - What's up?
  • Person 2: خوبم، تو هستی؟ (khubam, to hasti?) - I'm good, how about you?

In Iranian Persian, it is common to use the verb "be" when greeting someone. For example, when saying hello, you can say "سلام، من یستم" (salam, man yestam) which means "Hello, I am".
