Introduction[edit | edit source]

Welcome to the lesson on present tense verbs in Ukrainian! In this lesson, we will learn how to form and use present tense verbs, including both regular and irregular verbs. Verbs are an essential part of any language, as they allow us to express actions and states of being. Understanding how to use verbs correctly is crucial for effective communication in Ukrainian.

Forming Present Tense Verbs[edit | edit source]

To form present tense verbs in Ukrainian, we need to consider the personal pronouns and the verb endings. Let's take a look at the verb endings for regular verbs in the present tense:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
Я говорю YA hovor-yu I speak
Ти говориш Ty hovor-ysh You speak (informal)
Він/Вона/Воно говорить Vin/Vona/Vono hovor-yt He/She/It speaks
Ми говоримо My hovor-ymo We speak
Ви говорите Vy hovor-yte You speak (formal/plural)
Вони говорять Vony hovor-yat They speak

As you can see, the endings of the verbs change depending on the subject pronoun. It is important to note that Ukrainian has both singular and plural forms of "you," which is reflected in the verb endings.

Now, let's move on to irregular verbs. Irregular verbs have different conjugation patterns and do not follow the regular verb endings. Here are some examples of irregular verbs in the present tense:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
Я їм YA yim I eat
Ти їси Ty yisi You eat (informal)
Він/Вона/Воно їсть Vin/Vona/Vono yist He/She/It eats
Ми їмо My yimo We eat
Ви їсте Vy yiste You eat (formal/plural)
Вони їдять Vony yidyat They eat

As you can see, the irregular verbs have their own unique endings in the present tense. It is important to memorize the conjugation patterns of irregular verbs to use them correctly in sentences.

Using Present Tense Verbs[edit | edit source]

Now that we know how to form present tense verbs, let's explore how to use them in sentences. Present tense verbs are used to describe actions or states of being that are happening right now or are generally true. Here are some examples:

Actions happening right now[edit | edit source]

- Я говорю по-українськи. (YA hovor-yu po-ukrains'ky) - I speak Ukrainian. - Вона читає книгу. (Vona chyta-ye knyhu) - She is reading a book. - Ми граємо в футбол. (My hra-ye-mo v futbol) - We are playing soccer.

In these examples, the present tense verbs describe actions that are happening at the moment of speaking. They indicate ongoing actions or actions that are in progress.

Actions that are generally true[edit | edit source]

- Собака гавкає. (Sobaka havka-ye) - The dog barks. - Вода кипить при 100 градусах Цельсія. (Voda ky-pyt' pry 100 hra-du-sah Tsel'-siya) - Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius. - Сонце сходить на сході. (Sontse skho-dyt' na skho-di) - The sun rises in the east.

In these examples, the present tense verbs describe actions or states of being that are generally true and not limited to a specific moment in time.

Expressing habits and routines[edit | edit source]

- Я завжди п'ю каву зранку. (YA zavzhydy pyu ka-vu zran-ku) - I always drink coffee in the morning. - Вона часто ходить в кіно. (Vona chas-to kho-dyt' v ki-no) - She often goes to the cinema. - Ми зазвичай їмо сніданок о 8 ранку. (My za-vzhy-chay yimo sni-dan-ok o 8 ran-ku) - We usually have breakfast at 8 in the morning.

In these examples, the present tense verbs describe habits or routines that happen repeatedly or regularly.
