Getting to School in Sweden

In this lesson, Anna wants to borrow a bike so she can ride it to school, which leads us to the question: How do Swedish children and youth get to school every day? There is, of course, no single and straightforward answer to this question, since this varies depending on where the family lives in relation to the school and so forth. But there are regulations that give us insights into how school children and youth get to and from school. In Sweden, all school children who attend the nine-year mandatory school system are entitled to get free transportation if they fulfill certain criteria. These criteria are based on the distance between the school and the student's home and the age of the child. The older the child or youth gets, the longer a distance between their home and school is required in order to get access to free transportation. The transportation that is offered is, in most cases, public transportation by bus or train. For children with disabilities, special transportation is sometimes arranged.
