Cultural Insight > How Do Swedish Students Celebrate Graduation?

Graduating from high school, or gymnasiet, in Sweden is a very special occasion for many Swedish youth. Tourists who happen to visit Sweden, and particularly Stockholm, at the beginning of June are likely to encounter these student during their celebrations. For high school students who graduate, it's not uncommon for the whole class to rent a flatbed truck. After the formal graduation ceremony, they jump onboard the truck's tray and drive around on the streets of Stockholm to celebrate. These students are very easy to spot. In fact, it will be impossible to miss them if you're around Stockholm that time of year, partly because they'll all be dressed in white with the traditional white student cap on their heads, and partly because they'll be playing music really loud and usually singing at the top of their lungs. After celebrating with their class, many students gather with friends, family, and relatives at their own house to enjoy some food and drinks and to open some presents. In the evening, there's usually a party arranged for the whole school, so many students leave their homes one more time to join their friends and classmates for a final celebration.
