Allowance

In this lesson, Hans and Kerstin are discussing whether to raise Jens' weekly allowance, and we'll, therefore, spend some time talking about how much Swedish children and youth get and some of the requirements that might come with it. To start with, giving your children a weekly allowance is fairly common in Sweden, and statistics have shown that about seventy percent of children receive some kind of allowance. Younger children often get a weekly allowance, while older children and youth are more likely to get a monthly allowance. The amount of the allowance also often increases by age, and children between the ages of six and eight years received twenty-six crowns a week, while youth between the ages of fifteen and seventeen got 713 crowns per month on average. The great majority of children who receive weekly or monthly allowance are expected to do something in return. Among the most common chores are things like cleaning their room, doing their homework, and doing the dishes.
