To be understood when speaking in English
This is the most obvious reason. Learning a language allows you to communicate.
Misunderstandings can generate frustration on both sides.
A mispronunciation gives the impression of a bad English.
Consider the example of two persons passing a job interview in English: The first person has good grades, a good grammatical level and a large vocabulary but a poor pronunciation. The other person has a very basic grammatical level, a vocabulary of about 1,500 words, but a good pronunciation.
The other person has a correct accent and speaks fluently, even if he uses very simple sentence structures. Sometimes he has to overcome his lack of vocabulary by using a phrase or several words.
In your opinion, which of the two will get the job according to his English? The second of course! As he has a good pronunciation, he immediately gives the impression of an advanced level.
Pronunciation is one of the easiest ways to increase its level of English.
However, just 10 minutes a day of practice can significantly improve your pronunciation.
By following these four steps, you will be able to have a very good English pronunciation. This is not going to take years, but mostly, it's something fun, enjoyable and rewarding!
- Re-learn the pronunciation of the most common words.
- Practice listening with podcasts, movies, series or audiobooks.
- Practicing oral speaking with English-speaking friends
In French, there are 32 sounds with more than 250 ways to write them.
In English, there are over 44 sounds and more than 1,100 ways to write them. It is then impossible to rely on guessing the pronunciation according to spelling. The same group of letters can be pronounced completely differently depending on the word.
For example, English has 17 sounds that do not exist in French. These sounds are difficult to pronounce for French people. Their mouth is not used to pronounce them. In addition, their ear are not accustomed to listening to these sounds and to differentiate them. Their brain tends to use the nearest French sound.
At birth, the native French speaker's brain is able to distinguish all sounds but gradually eliminates the sounds that are not used in the French language.

jeet_gurjaFebruary 2018 Awesome but why some people say "it's a fake accent" when you are trying to learn a native English pronunciation or accent? |
vincentJanuary 2021 I guess it’s because some people tend to exagerate and it does not sound natural
