French Grammar - Irregular plurals for nouns ending in -ail

Regular Plural

  • Many nouns ending in -ail have a regular plural in -ails, for example:
    • des details (details),
    • des éventails (fans),
    • des rails (rails),
    • des gouvernails (rudders).

Irregular Plural

  • However, a number of nouns in -ail are pluralized with -aux, like in the examples below:
Singular French Plural French Translation
un bail des baux lease(s)
un corail des coraux coral(s)
un émail des émaux enamel(s)
un soupirail des soupiraux window(s)
le travail les travaux work(s)
un vitrail des vitraux stained glass window(s)
