Bulgarian Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Bulgarian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Bulgarian. We will look at how to form the future tense, as well as some examples of its use.

The future tense in Bulgarian is formed using the verb stem and the ending -ще. The verb stem is the part of the verb that remains after removing the infinitive ending -а/-я. For example, the verb stem of пиша (to write) is пиш.

To form the future tense, add the ending -ще to the verb stem. For example, the future tense of пиша is пишще.

The future tense is used to talk about actions that will happen in the future. It can also be used to express probability or possibility.

Examples

Bulgarian Pronunciation English Translation
ще пиша shte pisha I will write
ти ще говориш ti shte govorish you will speak
тя ще излезе tya shte izleye she will leave
те ще правят te shte pravyat they will do
той ще дойде toy shte doyde he will come

The future tense can also be used to express probability or possibility. For example:

Bulgarian Pronunciation English Translation
той ще идва toy shte idva he will probably come
тя ще може да пристигне tya shte mozhe da pristigne she might arrive
те ще могат да правят te shte mogat da pravyat they could do
ти ще можеш да говориш ti shte mozhesh da govorish you may speak
ще пиша shte pisha I might write
