Ukrainian Vocabulary → → Basic Greetings and Responses

As a Ukrainian language teacher, it is crucial to start with the basics. In this lesson, we will learn the most common greetings and responses in the Ukrainian language. You will learn how to greet people, introduce yourself and reply politely.

Greetings

Greetings in Ukrainian depend on the time of day or the occasion. Here are the most common ones:

Доброго ранку (dobroho ranku)

This greeting means "good morning" in English. It is used from early morning till about 11 am.

Доброго дня (dobroho dnya)

This greeting means "good day" in English. It is used from 12 pm till 5 pm.

Добрий вечір (dobryy vechir)

This greeting means "good evening" in English. It is used from 6 pm till 11 pm.

Привіт (pryvit)

This is a general greeting that can be used anytime for informal settings. It means "hello" in English.

До побачення (do pobachennya)

This phrase means "goodbye" in English. It can be used in any setting.

До зустрічі (do zustrichi)

This phrase means "see you" in English. It is an informal way of saying goodbye and can be used among friends and family.

Па (pa)

This phrase means "bye" in English. It is a very casual and informal way of saying goodbye and is usually used among friends.

Note that when greeting someone, it is polite to address them by their name. In Ukrainian, you use the vocative case when addressing someone by their name. To form the vocative case, simply take the person's name and add an appropriate ending.

Responses

When someone greets you, it is polite to respond. Here are some common responses to the greetings you have learned:

Доброго ранку (dobroho ranku) / Доброго дня (dobroho dnya) / Добрий вечір (dobryy vechir)

To respond to these greetings, you can simply say the same thing back. For example, if someone says "Доброго ранку (dobroho ranku)", you can respond with "Доброго ранку (dobroho ranku)" as well.

Привіт (pryvit)

You can respond with the same phrase - "Привіт (pryvit)". It is a simple and polite way to respond to someone who greets you informally.

До побачення (do pobachennya) / До зустрічі (do zustrichi) / Па (pa)

If someone says goodbye to you, you can respond simply by saying "До побачення (do pobachennya)", "До зустрічі (do zustrichi)" or "Па (pa)" back.

Learning these basic greetings and responses will help you to get acquainted with Ukrainian culture and communicate better with native speakers.
