Asking for directions is an essential skill when traveling in a foreign country. In this lesson, you will learn some useful phrases to help you ask for directions in Arabic.

Vocabulary
Here is some basic Arabic vocabulary that is useful when asking for directions:

Phrases
Here are some Arabic phrases that you can use when asking for directions:
- Excuse me, where is...? عذراً، أين...؟ ("ʿaḏran, ʾayna...?")
- How can I get to...? كيف يمكنني الوصول إلى...؟ ("kayf yumkinuni al-wuṣūl ʾilā...?")
- Is it far? هل هو بعيد؟ ("hal huwa baʿīd?")
- Is it near? هل هو قريب؟ ("hal huwa qarīb?")
- Turn right. انعطف يميناً ("inʿaṭif yamīnan.")
- Turn left. انعطف يساراً ("inʿaṭif yasāran.")
- Go straight. اذهب مباشرة ("iḏhab mubāshirah.")
- Here is a map. هذه خريطة ("hādhīhi kharīṭah.")
Conversation examples
Here are some conversation examples to help you practice asking for directions:
Example 1:
Person 1: عذراً، أين هي محطة الحافلات؟ ("ʿaḏran, ʾayna hiya maḥaṭṭat al-ḥāfilāt?")
Person 2: تذهب مباشرة، ثم تنعطف يمينًا بعد الجسر. (tadhhab mubāshirah, thumma tanʿṭif yamīnan baʿda al-jisr.)
Person 1: شكراً! (shukran!)
Example 2:
Person 1: عذراً، كيف يمكنني الوصول إلى الفندق؟ ("ʿaḏran, kayf yumkinuni al-wuṣūl ʾilā al-funduq?")
Person 2: انعطف يميناً عند الإشارة، ثم انعطف يساراً عند المنشفة، ويجب أن تراه بعد ذلك. (inʿaṭif yamīnan ʿind al-ʾishārah, thumma inʿaṭif yasāran ʿind al-manshafah, wayajib ʾan tarāh baʿda dhālik.)
Person 1: شكراً جزيلاً! (shukran jazīlan!)
Tips
Here are some tips to keep in mind when asking for directions:
- Make sure you have a map and a pen in case you need to write down directions.
