Introduction

Vocabulary

Let's start by learning some vocabulary related to telling time in Ukrainian. Familiarize yourself with the following words and phrases:

• Time - Час (Chas)
• Hour - Година (Hodyna)
• Minute - Хвилина (Khvylyna)
• Second - Секунда (Sekunda)
• Morning - Ранок (Ranok)
• Afternoon - День (Den)
• Evening - Вечір (Vechir)
• Night - Ніч (Nich)
• Midnight - Північ (Pivnich)
• Noon - Полудень (Poluden)

Now that you have a basic understanding of the vocabulary, let's move on to learning how to express time in Ukrainian.

Telling Time in Ukrainian

Expressing Hours

To express the hours in Ukrainian, you simply state the number followed by the word "година" (hodyna), which means "hour". Here are some examples:

• 1 o'clock - 1 година (1 hodyna)
• 2 o'clock - 2 години (2 hodyny)
• 3 o'clock - 3 години (3 hodyny)
• 4 o'clock - 4 години (4 hodyny)
• 5 o'clock - 5 годин (5 hodyn)
• 6 o'clock - 6 годин (6 hodyn)
• 7 o'clock - 7 годин (7 hodyn)
• 8 o'clock - 8 годин (8 hodyn)
• 9 o'clock - 9 годин (9 hodyn)
• 10 o'clock - 10 годин (10 hodyn)
• 11 o'clock - 11 годин (11 hodyn)
• 12 o'clock - 12 годин (12 hodyn)

Notice that for numbers 5 and above, we use the plural form of the word "година" (hodyna).

Expressing Minutes

To express the minutes in Ukrainian, you state the number followed by the word "хвилина" (khvylyna), which means "minute". Here are some examples:

• 1 minute - 1 хвилина (1 khvylyna)
• 2 minutes - 2 хвилини (2 khvylyny)
• 3 minutes - 3 хвилини (3 khvylyny)
• 4 minutes - 4 хвилини (4 khvylyny)
• 5 minutes - 5 хвилин (5 khvylyn)
• 6 minutes - 6 хвилин (6 khvylyn)
• 7 minutes - 7 хвилин (7 khvylyn)
• 8 minutes - 8 хвилин (8 khvylyn)
• 9 minutes - 9 хвилин (9 khvylyn)
• 10 minutes - 10 хвилин (10 khvylyn)
• 15 minutes - 15 хвилин (15 khvylyn)
• 30 minutes - 30 хвилин (30 khvylyn)
• 45 minutes - 45 хвилин (45 khvylyn)

Again, notice that for numbers 5 and above, we use the plural form of the word "хвилина" (khvylyna).

Asking for the Time

To ask for the time in Ukrainian, you can use the following phrases:

• "Котра година?" (Kotra hodyna?) - What time is it?
• "Скільки годин?" (Skilky hodyn?) - How many hours?
• "Скільки хвилин?" (Skilky khvylyn?) - How many minutes?

For example, you can ask:

• "Котра година?" (Kotra hodyna?) - What time is it?
• "Скільки годин?" (Skilky hodyn?) - How many hours?
• "Скільки хвилин?" (Skilky khvylyn?) - How many minutes?

Giving the Time

To give the time in Ukrainian, you can use the following phrases:

• "Зараз ___ година." (Zaraz ___ hodyna.) - It is ___ o'clock.
• "Зараз ___ години ___ хвилин." (Zaraz ___ hodyny ___ khvylyn.) - It is ___ hours ___ minutes.
• "___ година ___ хвилин." (___ hodyna ___ khvylyn.) - ___ o'clock ___ minutes.
• "___ години ___ хвилин." (___ hodyny ___ khvylyn.) - ___ hours ___ minutes.

For example, you can say:

• "Зараз одинадцята година." (Zaraz odynadtsiata hodyna.) - It is eleven o'clock.
• "Зараз п'ятнадцять хвилин по десятій годині." (Zaraz piatnadtsiat khvylyn po desiatii hodyni.) - It is fifteen minutes past ten o'clock.

Remember to use the correct form of the word "година" (hodyna) for the hour and the correct form of the word "хвилина" (khvylyna) for the minute.
