Polish Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Polish learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Polish grammar. This is an important part of the language and understanding it will help you to communicate more effectively. We will look at how to form the conditional mood, when to use it, and some examples of its usage.

Consider broadening your understanding by checking out these related lessons: Cases, Gender, Nouns & Nominative Case.

Forming the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is formed by adding the suffix -by to the stem of the verb. For example, the verb "jechać" (to go) becomes "jechałby" in the conditional mood.

Irregular Verbs[edit | edit source]

There are some irregular verbs in Polish that have different forms in the conditional mood. For example, the verb "być" (to be) becomes "byłby" in the conditional mood.

When to Use the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or a wish. It can also be used to express politeness.

For example:

  • Gdybym miał więcej czasu, chciałbym zwiedzić więcej miast. (If I had more time, I would like to visit more cities.)
  • Proszę, gdybyś mógł mi pomóc, bardzo bym ci dziękował. (Please, if you could help me, I would be very grateful.)

Examples[edit | edit source]

Here are some examples of the conditional mood in action:

  • Gdybym miała więcej pieniędzy, kupiłabym nowy samochód. (If I had more money, I would buy a new car.)
  • Gdybym miała więcej czasu, uczyłabym się języka niemieckiego. (If I had more time, I would learn German.)
  • Gdybym miała więcej energii, chodziłabym na siłownię. (If I had more energy, I would go to the gym.)
